Purchase of Alaska

This political cartoon is about the purchase of Alaska which is also known as “Seward’s Icebox” and “Seward’s Folly.” However, the message of this political cartoon is the purchase of Alaska benefit the America. For about tow cents an acre, the United States has acquired a land rich in timber, minerals, and oil. The “Russian America” ice that King Andy and his man Billy carry is represent the advantage that benefit the America. And that will cool down the Congressional majority who think the purchase of Alaska was a waste of money. The other opinion that another person could have on this issue is that ice is not enough to cool down the Congressional majority, because some people could still think the purchase of Alaska was a waste of money. The cartoonist used symbolism that the two guys who carrying the ice are the King Andy and his man Billy, and the one guy who carrying the money of a bundle could be Russian leader. Also the ice that from Alaska is what America get by the purchase of Alaska. In addition the cartoonist also used labeling that “Russian America” on ice and “Treaty” on the bottom of ice which help King Andy and Billy to carrying it. This cartoon support my position on America which is pro-imperialism. The purchase of Alaska extend the America’s imperialism and expansionism. In U.S., it make the raw materials, economic growth, and it expanded the U.S. territory.
