Annexation of Hawaii

This political cartoon is about the annexation of Hawaii which was a revolt of American planters in Hawaii against Queen Liliuokalani. The message of this political cartoon is the U.S get bunch of sugar cane by annexation of Hawaii. Some American missionaries started plantations while they were in Hawaii to spread their church’s faith. And Queen Liliuokalani, the leader of Hawaii, limit the American planters’ power. As a result, the American planters in Hawaii upset and they asked to be annexed by the United States. The other opinion that another person could have on this issue is the Hawaii and the Hawaiian people became a part of the U.S. without their approval, because we did not have the consent of the Hawaiian people to annex them. The cartoonist used symbolism that a guy who stand on sugar box is Uncle Sam, and the dwarf who sit down next to Uncle Sam is Hawaiian with complaint face. Additionally, the woman is Queen Liliuokalani who overthrew by the American planters in Hawaii. The cartoonist also used labeling that “sugar” which the U.S. gain from the annexation of Hawaii. And “provisional government” inside of Hawaiian’s hat which represent the annexation of Hawaii was not became part of U.S. with Hawaii and Hawaiian people’s approval. This cartoon support my pro-imperialism on America. The U.S. gain Pearl Harbor which is refueling station, sugar cane, and it expanded the U.S. territory that Hawaii as an fifteenth state in U.S.
