Panama Canal

This political cartoon is about the Panama Canal which was important to help America to access to the Pacific Ocean. The message of this cartoon is the U.S. took control of Panama with President Roosevelt’s support. The isthmus of Panama, a narrow strip of land connective two larger land areas, was the best spot for a canal. However, Panama was a colony of Colombia, and we knew that Colombia will not give up Panama easily. To clarify, the U.S helped the Panama to became their own nation. The Panama allowed the U.S to use the canal zone which is a ten mile wide strip of land. The other opinion that another person could have on this issue is the U.S. threatened the Panama. The U.S. navy with threatening weapons look like they are going to swallow the Panama. The cartoonist used exaggeration that the Republican ship with the U.S. navy is bigger than the Colombians and Panamanians. Also, the cartoonist used labeling that the land the U.S. ship arrived is “Panama”, “The Roosevelt Doctrine”, and “Colombia” and “ U.S.S. G.O.P” on their flags. This cartoon support my pro-imperialism on America. The U.S. gain control of Panama canal and that saved 7852 miles by bypassing the trip around South America.
